The O2GTR is an important determinant of the packaging protection afforded by barrier materials. It is not, however, the sole determinant, and additional tests, based on experience, must be used to correlate packaging performance with O2GTR.
What is ASTM F2622?
ASTM F2622 is a standard test method developed to measure the Oxygen Gas Transmission Rate (OTR) through plastic films and sheeting. This standard is primarily used in industries such as food and pharmaceutical packaging, where it is essential to understand how much oxygen permeates a packaging material. The test is particularly important for determining the effectiveness of barrier materials in protecting oxygen-sensitive products. It also helps in assessing the oxygen permeability coefficient and the permeance of the material to oxygen gas.
Test Standard for Determination of Oxygen Gas Transmission Rate
The Oxygen Gas Transmission Rate (OTR) measures how much oxygen gas permeates a material over time. ASTM F2622 offers a method for evaluating this rate in films, laminates, coextrusions, or plastic-coated materials. It allows the use of various sensors to assess oxygen permeation and calculates metrics like oxygen permeability and permeance. The versatility of this standard allows the use of different sensors, including electrochemical and other types of detectors. It is especially useful when precise measurement of oxygen permeation is needed to maintain product quality and shelf life.
ASTM F2622 Test Process
The ASTM F2622 process involves placing a film or sheet between two chambers: one filled with oxygen and the other with an inert gas like nitrogen. The test measures the rate at which oxygen diffuses through the film into the nitrogen-filled chamber. Sensors, either coulometric or non-coulometric, then detect the oxygen passing through. Coulometric sensors analyze 100% of the oxygen, while non-coulometric ones may sample a portion, requiring calibration for accuracy. This test method is particularly valuable for evaluating the performance of packaging materials for sensitive goods, ensuring that the correct oxygen barrier is used.
