ASTM D3654 standard aims to measure the ability of pressure-sensitive tapes to remain adhered under constant load that is applied parallel to the tape’s surface. A-H test method is included. Each test method points to different test materials and requires specialized testing instruments.
Test Procedure
Procedure A mainly is used to test the shear adhesion ability of a pressure-sensitive tape. The pressure-sensitive tape has to adhere to a vertical standard steel panel under constant stress. The test result can not be a suggestion for the ability of the tape to adhere to other surfaces.
Procedure B is able to test the shear adhesion of tapes which are used to close fiberboard boxes in the packaging industry by being applied to a vertical panel. The vertical panel is covered with fiberboard (NIST SRM 1810A).
As the fiberboard used to cover the vertical panel corresponds to the CEN standard, procedure C is conducted.
The shear adhesion of pressure-sensitive tapes to nonstandard fiberboard can be measured with procedure D. Meanwhile, through procedure D, the shear adhesion values of pressure-sensitive tapes to various nonstandard fiberboard can be compared.
To measure shear adhesion of filament reinforced tape, the tape is placed to a horizontal standard steel panel under constant stress with procedure E.
Procedure F adopts NIST SRM 1810A standard fiberboard which covers the horizontal panel to test shear adhesion of filament reinforced tape.
With processing procedure G, CEN standard fiberboard is used to cover the horizontal panel. The same point with procedure F is to measure the values of shear adhesion of filament reinforced tape.
Procedure H: as the pressure-sensitive tape is applied to a vertical standard steel panel, at an elevated temperature the test is operated, and the value of shear adhesion is obtained. The durative time of procedure H is less than that of other procedures. Like that, the instrument with ASTM D3654 procedure H is advanced. Saicheng’s WKC-6S Temperature Control Lasting Adhesive Tester is manufactured with ASTM D3654 procedure H and is conducted to test the holding power of pressure-sensitive tapes.
